On the image

Someone's front steps became the evening's designated make-out venue, a tradition that required no reservation and no permission from the owner of the stoop, only darkness and a willingness to ignore the trash cans nearby. He has committed fully, one hand around her shoulders and the other on her knee, in the confident manner of a young man who believes the neighbors are all asleep.

She is dressed for the occasion in a sleeveless orange dress with a lace collar, the kind of outfit a girl in the 1950s wore on a date that was meant to look casual but was planned for a week. The metal can beside them, stenciled with a brand name for kerosene or delivery milk, sat there doing its ordinary job while the couple did theirs, indifferent to the romance happening six inches away.

Nobody in this scene expected to be documented. That is usually the tell of an authentic moment from the era: the flash catches people mid-gesture, unposed and unbothered, doing the thing courting couples have always done on stone steps after the porch light goes off.
