By 1958, the United States had committed itself to building a nervous system of microwave relay stations across its most inhospitable terrain, and someone at this remote installation decided the dish needed a man standing in front of it for scale. The man obliges, arms folded against what looks like genuine cold, dwarfed by a parabolic antenna of the kind that was then carrying long-distance telephone calls and early television signals across distances that would have required miles of copper wire a decade earlier. He has the posture of someone who helped build this thing and wants credit for it.
The installation has the functional bleakness of mid-century federal infrastructure: unpaved ground, prefabricated buildings on the horizon, fuel drums placed wherever they stopped rolling. These relay stations were often staffed by small crews in isolated postings, maintaining equipment that the rest of the country used without the faintest awareness it existed. The lattice towers flanking the dish suggest this was one node in a longer chain.
Microwave relay networks like this one were the backbone of American telecommunications until fiber optic cable made them obsolete — at which point every man who had spent a winter keeping one running became a footnote. He is standing in front of the future, and it will not remember him.
The historian's note
The installation shown is a large parabolic tracking or early-warning radar antenna typical of remote Arctic and sub-Arctic defense and communications sites constructed in North America during the late 1950s. Structures of this kind supported early Cold War radar networks, including the Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line and associated tracking stations, built to detect aircraft or missiles approaching over the polar region.
Such sites were characterized by elevated steel-frame mounts to cope with permafrost and snow load, prefabricated support buildings, and fuel drums stockpiled on-site due to the logistical difficulty of resupply. Personnel stationed at these outposts were typically small technical crews responsible for equipment maintenance and monitoring.
By 1958 these networks represented a major expansion of continental air-defense infrastructure, reflecting the period's anxiety over surprise attack and the accompanying investment in radar and early satellite-tracking technology, much of which was superseded within a decade by newer detection systems.
