On the image

Someone in 1958 loaded infrared film into a camera and pointed it at the ocean, which promptly turned the color of raspberry jam. The water went magenta, the sky went pink, and the whole scene developed the appearance of a dream someone would have after eating too much candy. A small vessel sits on the horizon, rendered as a dark speck in all this chromatic enthusiasm, looking less like a ship and more like a smudge on the photographer's intent.

This was infrared photography, a technique that had migrated from wartime reconnaissance into the hands of civilians and experimental photographers who believed that a different kind of film stock could reveal hidden truth. What it actually revealed was that the ocean looked better in black and white, and that the enthusiasm for technical novelty will outlast its usefulness by a decade or two. The photographer saw a chance to make the ordinary look alien and took it, which is exactly what happens when a tool becomes available and no one yet knows when to stop.
