Some people believed that if you dug a hole big enough, valuable things would eventually appear. In the 1970s, this often meant huge excavations for rock, the kind of essential raw material that built all the things we now take for granted.
Towering cranes stand ready to move the results of geological processes that took millennia, now processed with a few sticks of dynamite and some well-placed machinery. The water at the bottom, an unsettling greenish hue, probably contained important industrial byproducts, or perhaps just optimism.
This landscape was considered progress, a testament to the era's unwavering belief that any natural resource could be improved by digging it up and putting it somewhere else.
The historian's note
This image documents an active rock quarry during the 1970s, showcasing large-scale excavation operations typical of the era. Quarries provided essential raw materials such as aggregate, building stone, and industrial minerals crucial for infrastructure development, construction, and various manufacturing processes.
Visible are deep cut faces indicating systematic rock removal, along with heavy lifting equipment, likely derrick cranes, used for handling large blocks or large volumes of material. The presence of standing water at the pit's base is common in many quarry environments, accumulating from groundwater or precipitation.
Industrial sites like this were fundamental to economic growth in the mid-20th century. Environmental considerations, particularly regarding landscape alteration and water management, were evolving during the 1970s but were generally less stringent than contemporary standards.
