The couple has parked directly beneath the sign, which is exactly where the AAA emblem wanted them to stand. A hotel could hang a hundred claims on its own porch, but nothing settled an American traveler's nerves in the 1950s like the sight of that oval shield and the words Official Hotel, proof that some distant inspector in Missouri had already done the worrying for you.

They pose the way people posed when a vacation photograph was still a rationed thing, one roll of film for the whole trip, so you made sure the sign was legible and the car was in frame, since both would need explaining to the neighbors back home. The Chevrolet's chrome grille gets nearly as much attention as the two of them, because in this era a car was not transportation so much as a second, quieter member of the family.

Behind them Lake Taneycomo's namesake resort sits low and shaded under Ozark pine, the kind of place built for people who wanted nature with a front desk. Nobody in this snapshot suspects that the hotel's name, the club decal, even the reassuring AAA seal will all outlast the building far more than the building outlasts the century.
