She is propped up in a hospital bed with the kind of crank-adjustable frame that let 1950s nurses raise a patient to a good visiting angle without lifting a finger, unwrapping something small while a man in a dark suit leans in to watch. The overbed table has been swung across her lap and then abandoned in favor of the visitor's own end table, because a hospital room in this decade came furnished for company as much as for convalescence.
Someone brought red carnations, propped in a plain glass vase on the windowsill next to a folded hospital gown, the standard offering for a bedside call before flowers were banned from most wards as infection risk. He has come straight from somewhere requiring a tie, which was simply what a grown man wore to visit anyone in any condition. The little unwrapped item in her hands is being inspected with the exaggerated care people give a gift when the real point of the visit is just that someone came.
A folded newspaper sits on the table's edge, brought to fill the hours a hospital stay was still expected to include, back when a broken bone or a routine procedure could buy a week of bed rest and nothing to do but wait for visiting hours.
