A photographer stands at the edge of a German town as the light drains from the sky, positioning himself to catch the silhouette of a Gothic church spire against the last blue of evening—the kind of shot that asserts the timelessness of European architecture, as if history were a permanent condition and not something recently, violently interrupted. The tall spire on the left dominates the frame with the confidence of a structure built to outlast empires, flanked by the orderly pitched roofs of half-timbered burgher houses and apartment blocks that speak to centuries of accumulation and repair. This is the view a traveler in the postwar 1950s would have framed deliberately, seeking proof that something had survived intact, that the medieval town still stood as it always had, that Europe could be rebuilt because Europe was essentially indestructible. The photographer's choice to shoot into the gloaming, when detail vanishes and only silhouette remains, lets him have it both ways: the town appears eternal and untouched, and the camera asks no questions about what happened to it between 1930 and 1950.
