On the image

Five jets cross the frame nose-down and wingtip-close, trailing five parallel scars of vapor across a sky that otherwise looks entirely undisturbed. Nobody photographs a formation like this by accident. Someone stood in a field, neck bent back, camera aimed straight up, because the whole point of a 1960s airshow was to make several million dollars of jet engine look effortless.

The tightness of the formation was the performance. Air forces of the era spent enormous budgets teaching pilots to fly close enough together that the public would gasp, and the gasping was the budget's actual justification, since taxpayers rarely got invited to cost-benefit briefings but were regularly invited to airshows. The contrails hanging behind them are doing the bragging the jets themselves are too far away to do directly.

Whoever aimed the camera got one clean pass and a sky otherwise empty of anything to argue with. That was the deal with airshows then: you got one look, no replay, and you decided on faith that the formation had been that tight the whole time and not just for the second the shutter caught it.
