Someone here believed passionately in symmetry. The flowerbeds are cut into matching lozenges and crescents, the hedges trimmed to identical heights, and two thin fountains sent up to mark the exact points where the eye was meant to pause on its way to the pink archway at the far end of the lawn.

This is the geometry of a princely garden, the kind maintained by a small army of malis for a family that, by the 1960s, may no longer have held any formal title beyond the deed to the lawn itself. India's rulers had lost their political power a decade earlier and would lose their privy purses by the end of the next one, but the gardens kept running on the old schedule, mowed and bedded out as though a durbar might be held that afternoon.

The white bench under the tree faces the arch rather than the flowers, which tells you who this garden was actually built for. Not the gardeners, who did the kneeling. The family, who did the walking through it once a week and calling it theirs.
