The yellow-and-white floatplane tied up at the left edge of the frame was not a novelty here, it was the driveway. In the bush country of Alaska or the Yukon in the 1960s, a Cessna on pontoons did the work a station wagon did everywhere else, and the owners of the shingled lodge behind it assumed, correctly for their lifetime, that this was simply how a person got groceries, mail, and guests to a house with no road in.

The building itself, gable-roofed and comfortably oversized for the clearing it sits in, has the look of a fishing camp or float-plane outpost that saw money spent on it precisely because access was hard, which in this business was the whole point of coming. Spruce and birch crowd the property line the way they always do at the edge of cleared northern ground, patient about eventually taking it back.

Someone has already begun that reclamation without permission: the low brush in the foreground has advanced to the water's edge, quietly annexing what was once, in the confident era of this photograph, a tidy lawn.
