Eight relatives have been arranged by someone with strong opinions about photography, shortest at the ends, tallest in the middle, the way a school photographer lines up a class picture without irony. The woman in front still has her handbag looped over her arm, proof that in the 1950s a lady did not set down her purse even inside her own living room, because a photograph was a small formal occasion and formal occasions required readiness to leave at any moment.
Behind them the room supplies its own quiet inventory of what a proud household displayed: a brass ceiling fixture doing more work than the bare bulb it replaced, sheer curtains drawn for the flash, and a shelf of little figurines lined up with the same discipline as the people below them. Someone has just told a joke, or is about to, because two of the men are fighting a laugh while everyone else has already locked into the expression reserved for family photographs.
No one here looks like they are posing for history, only for whoever would eventually be handed the print and expected to name everyone in it. That the names are gone now and the furniture remains perfectly identifiable is the small unfairness photographs of this kind always deliver.
