On the image

Someone, at some point, looked at this steep mountain slope and decided it was the perfect place to build a structure out of wood. They probably had good reasons, involving profit or at least basic utility, to haul all that lumber up here.

Now, all that remains is a haphazard collection of splintered boards and corrugated metal, slowly being reclaimed by the hillside. The effort involved to construct this, compared to its current state of elegant disintegration, provides a useful lesson in long-term planning, or lack thereof.

Even the faint line of a wire or cable across the frame, a testament to some past function, now merely serves as a subtle accent to the general state of abandonment, blending into the rock and pine trees that have always been here.

The historian's note

This image captures the ruins of a wooden structure, likely an ancillary building or headframe from a small-scale mining operation, situated on a steep, forested mountain slope. The presence of significant timber debris and corrugated metal suggests a former industrial presence now in a state of advanced decay.

Throughout the 1970s, many such sites across North America, particularly in the western states, were in decline or had been long abandoned as resource prices shifted, easily accessible deposits were exhausted, or environmental regulations changed. This photograph documents the physical aftermath of these historical economic and industrial transitions.
