A man has dragged his small wooden boat onto the sand of a shallow lagoon and tilted it up on its side, the work of modest maintenance that accounts for most of the actual labor in fishing villages where boats are too valuable to let rot but not so valuable that repair is called a trade. Behind him the water lies so still it barely deserves the name, and across it a wall of mangrove forest crowds the horizon with the dense, impenetrable look of terrain that exists primarily to make travel difficult. A few other boats drift in the middle distance, their operators engaged in the same quiet commerce of waiting and small adjustments that fills the hours between seasons. The whole scene carries the patient, unrushed quality of a place where nothing moves faster than wind and tide, and where a man with an afternoon and a tilted boat is doing exactly what needs doing with no hurry to it.
