Someone in 1960 believed that a boat should be hauled out of the water by main force and geometry rather than by asking the water nicely, and here is the machine built on that conviction. The big spoked drum and its cable, rigged through an overhead pulley toward a door blazing with outdoor light, belong to the unglamorous science of marina maintenance, the kind of gear that never appears in brochures about boating life but makes all of it possible.
Outside, half in silhouette, an outboard motor waits its turn, propeller up, looking faintly embarrassed to be caught between the workshop's shadow and the summer glare. Nobody photographs a winch because it is beautiful. Somebody photographed this one because it worked, and in 1960 that was still considered sufficient reason.
The whole arrangement has the confident permanence of equipment installed by a man who assumed cables and pulleys were a solved problem, forever. He was mostly right.
