Someone in the 1950s owned a new color slide camera and, like every other owner of a new color slide camera in that decade, immediately pointed it at a sunset. Kodachrome had just made it possible to bring the sky home in a little cardboard mount, and no one had yet tired of proving it could be done. The result is a sky doing exactly what skies do at dusk, dutifully recorded as though it were an event rather than a Tuesday.
Below the band of gold and blue, a ragged line of palms and other trees goes flat black, reduced to a silhouette because no one in 1950s amateur photography metered for foreground detail when the sky was the whole point. Whatever house, yard, or street those trees belonged to has been edited out by underexposure, which was the style whether you meant it or not. The photographer got the sunset they came for and lost everything else in the bargain.
Thousands of slide carousels from this decade contain a frame exactly like this one, filed between the relatives and the vacation landmarks, kept because throwing away a sunset felt vaguely disrespectful. It survives now as evidence less of a place than of a habit: the belief that a beautiful sky, once captured, stayed beautiful forever.
