1970年代の西部の風景の広大さは、家族ドライブの定番であり、ハイウェイに戻る前にKodachromeの無数のフィルムに捉えられたような景色であった。それは、壮大な眺めが魂を向上させるか、少なくとも後部座席で喧嘩する子供たちからの一時的な気晴らしを提供するという時代の信念の一部であった。

The historian's note

1970年代に撮影されたこの写真は、Western United Statesの乾燥地帯または半乾燥地帯に位置すると思われる山岳風景を描いている。遠い山脈での特徴的な青色の層状は、低湿度と長い視線距離のある地域でしばしば見られる一般的な大気効果である。

このような景色は、国立公園と州間高速道路を通じたアクセスの向上により観光とシーン鑑賞が促進された20世紀半ばのアマチュア写真の人気のあるテーマとなった。強調は未発達地域の広大さと自然美を捉えることにあった。

正確な場所は特定されていないままであるが、このシーンは、この時期の北米の多くの地域でまだ一般的であった広大で人口の少ない野生地帯を代表しており、保全または管理された資源採取のために指定されることが多かった。
