誰かがこの見晴らし台に到達するため、わざわざ砂利道を車で上ってきたのだ。1960年代にはコンクリート製の余水吐がまだ正当な観光名所と見なされていたからである。川を横切る低い堤は何かを御する――洪水、水位、水力発電の野心――ために造られ、写真家はそれを、かつての世代がカテドラルを構図に収めたのと同じやり方で撮った。前景の樹木が翼廊の役を果たしている。
余水吐より上の水は、エンジニアが意図した通り、平らで従順に横たわっている。一方、下流のすべてはまだ川のように振舞っている。フレーム内の誰も、これを奇妙だと思っていない様子だ。それがこの時代の静かな自信であった。水の流れに指図することができ、家族は車を停めてこの従順さを賞賛することができたのだ。
地平線へ向かって広がる森林に覆われた丘は、本来の風景としての役割を果たしているが、このようなスナップショットではまったく評価されない。堤が主題なのは、堤が成果だからである。丘はただそこにあり続けただけのものだ。
