川は丸太で満たされており、重力がその仕事をするのを待っている。1970年代では、森から製材所への膨大な量の木材の輸送は、川が協力するという前提のもと、全く許容できる方法だった。

The historian's note

この画像は丸太流送またはログブームを描いており、伐採された木材を川伝いに製材所に輸送する伝統的な方法である。この慣行は世界中の森林地帯、特に北米で広く行われており、19世紀後期から20世紀初期にピークに達した。

丸太流送は河川の自然な流れを利用し、ログドライバー（河川労働者）が丸太を誘導し詰まりを解いた。この写真が撮影された1970年代には、この慣行は衰退していき、より効率的で環境への影響が少ない道路と鉄道による木材輸送に徐々に置き換わっていった。

この方法は最終的に、水質、河川の生息地の破壊、および労働者の安全上のリスクに対する懸念から廃止された。この画像は、歴史的に重要なこの林業慣行の後期の事例の1つを捉えている。
