1950年代のある時期、誰かが、精巧な頭飾りを身につけた人物像を表す大型のブロンズ像、あるいは暗い緑青(パティナ)を帯びた彫刻を、簡素な台座に据えて廊下の真ん中に単独で立たせるべきだと決めた。まるで廊下そのものがギャラリーになったかのようである。木製のアーチや壁に掛けられた額入りの版画は、この施設が真剣な収蔵庫であることと、来館者が単に通り過ぎるだけの空間であることの間で揺れていたことを示している——芸術が最大限の効果を狙って配置されるのではなく、たまたま保管されているような場所である。右手では、コートと帽子を身につけた人々が戸口を通って別の部屋へ移動しており、彫像の存在には無関心である。これは、世紀半ばまでには、美術館側もほとんどの来館者がほとんどの彫刻の前で足を止めずに通り過ぎることを受け入れていたことを示唆している。この作品は、何年も前にここへ移され、あとは自らその存在意義を示すに任された物の自信をもって、その場所を占めている。

The historian's note

これは1950年代の美術館ないし施設内部と見られ、彫刻の規模と様式から、装飾美術あるいは民族学的収蔵品のコレクションである可能性が高い。アーチ、木製の装飾、そして格式ある展示照明は、世紀半ばのアメリカの美術館改修または展示の慣行と一致する。一見重要と思われる彫刻作品が、通路のような空間に無造作に置かれていることは、この時代における美術館体験に対する意識の変化を反映している——美術館は、密集したサロン様式の展示から、より開放的な配置へと移行し始めていたが、必ずしも学芸的な意図を伴っていたわけではない。額入りの版画と控えめな設置方法は、限られた予算や展示空間しか持たない施設が、来館者の関心を競い合っていたことを示唆しており、当時の美術館はまだ一般的な娯楽の場ではなく、主として真剣な研究の対象地であった。
