The historian's note

Montezuma Castle National Monumentは北米で最も良好な状態で保存されている崖住居の一つである。Arizona州Camp Verdeの近くに位置し、紀元後約1100年から1425年の間にプレコロンビア時代の民族であるSinagua文化によって建設された。

複数階の構造体はBeaver Creekの上方高くに位置する自然の石灰岩のアルコーヴに丹念に建設され、避難所と防御を提供していた。Sinagua民族は下方の肥沃なVerde Valleyで作物を栽培し、水のためにMontezuma Wellという永続的な湧水帯水層に依存していた。

1906年にTheodore Roosevelt大統領によってNational Monumentに指定され、当該遺跡は古代アメリカの建築および文化遺産の重要な事例を保存している。アメリカ南西部の初期住民の生活様式と砂漠環境への洗練された適応についての深刻な洞察を提供する。
