誰かが1/25スケールで丸ごと一国を建設し、それを「教育的」と呼んだ。これはオランダ人が派手でやや自己顕示的なあらゆるものを描写する際の常套句である。Madurodam のミニチュア・ビネンホフは、ここに従順に並んだ切妻煉瓦と粘板岩の列をなして立っており、すべての煙突と格子窓は、数キロ離れた実際の政府中枢に対してのみ通常予約される真摯さで再現されている。
庭では、小さな人形の列が人間の膝ほどの高さのゲートハウスの前を行進する。これは、国の縮尺模型でさえも、合法的に見えるために独自の小さな儀式が必要であることの証である。1960年代の観光客たちはここを上から眺め、オランダの市民秩序を支配する慈悲深い巨人のような気分を、束の間感じるために訪れた。
数キロ先のトラム一乗車で行ける本物の Binnenhof は、当時、実際の政府の運営に追われていた。ゴルフ場のグリーン並みの精度で刈り込まれた芝生ははるかに少なかった。しかしここでは、芝は完璧であり、屋根は決して雨漏りせず、ミニチュア・オランダのパーラメントは、実物大のそれがめったに成し遂げられないことを達成している──つまり、誰もが正確に一列に並んでいるのである。
