岩とそっくりなものを育てるというのは、1970年代に流行した特殊な室内趣味であった。この特定の品種である「生きた石」は、究極の植物的擬態を提供し、小石が散らばった環境とシームレスに調和していた。

これは、注意深く配置された小石と、単一のカムフラージュされた多肉植物が、前衛的な美的声明を表していると信じていた住宅所有者を示唆している。当時、これはおそらく相当洗練されたものと考えられていた。

The historian's note

リトープスは「生きた石」として一般的に知られており、南アフリカ原産の多肉植物である。その自然生息地の小石や岩を模倣したユニークな外観は、草食動物に対するカムフラージュの一形態である。

20世紀半ばから、特に1970年代を通じて、リトープスは独特な形態と比較的メンテナンスが少ないという特性から、温帯地域の観葉植物として人気を得るようになった。これらは屋内の植物装飾の特定のトレンドを表していた。ユニークで風変わりな植物に魅力を感じた愛好家に訴えかけるものであった。

それらの栽培は、しばしば専門の砂質土壌混合物、例えばここに見られる小石を使用して、それらの元々の乾燥環境条件を複製し、根腐れを防ぐ。この特定のセットアップは、その環境ニーズへの注意深い配慮を示唆している。
