アイオワ州のパレード委員会の誰かが、海のない農業州を南カリフォルニアの観衆に売り込む最良の方法は、州の輪郭そのものの形に縁取られた、高さ四フィートの文字で州名を綴り、その全体を花で覆うことだと決めた。フロートには歯車と、種子と花弁だけで表現された、犂か脱穀の一場面らしきものが載っている。農業機械も菊で作れば魅力的になる、という理論に基づいてのことだ。

これは委員会が何か月もかけ、パレードの一朝のためだけに途方もない意味を持つ、あの種の郷土宣伝熱である。行列のあらゆるフロートが、訛りを変えて同じ主張をしていた。すなわち、故郷は大陸を横断してでも自慢する価値があるという主張であり、アイオワの答えは規模だった。看板が十分に大きければ、誰もトウモロコシの州がなぜフロートを必要としたのかなど尋ねはしない。

背後の柱に立つ観覧席の照明は、フロートの設計者たちがつい最近になって意識し始めた、夜間のテレビ視聴者のために設けられたものだった。朝までには花はしおれ、看板は解体される。アイオワから三千マイル離れた場所でバスローブ姿の人々に、ほんの束の間の好感を抱かせるという、ただ一つの役目を果たし終えて。
