密集した針葉樹の樹冠は日光を濾し、1970年代に「自然写真」を意味し、それ以上の説明を必要としなかった、まだら光の照明を作り出している。人々はしばしば実用的な靴を履いて、背の高い緑の物の中で無意味に感じるために、こうした場所にやってきた。この感覚が失望することはめったになかった。

The historian's note

この画像は、背の高い木と厚い下生えを特徴とする密集した針葉樹林の内部を捉えている。このような森はコーストレッドウッド、ダグラスファー、シトカスプルースなどの種の生息地である北米太平洋岸北西部地域の特徴である。深い日中と濾過された光は、成熟またはプライマリエコシステムを示唆している。

1970年代、環境保全主義はアメリカ合衆国で大きな勢いを得ていた。自然景観の保護に対する公的関心は、国立公園の拡張と新しい荒野地域の確立につながり、特に西部の州で顕著であった。この時期はまた、屋外レクリエーション自然写真の増加をも見た。野生空間の認識された威厳と手つかずの質を捉えることに焦点を当てている。

木々の密度と見かけの年齢を考えると、視覚的証拠は保護地域を示唆しており、歴史的な伐採慣行のため、この十年までに指定公園または保護区の外ではますます稀になっていたであろう。
