冬が極度の厳しさで訪れた場所では、住宅所有者が玄関までの通路を保つ能力が市民的アイデンティティの中心部となった。1970年代に大雪に耐えた918号の住人は、このあからさまでない契約を明らかに理解していた。

The historian's note
1970年代に撮影されたこの写真は、かなりの冬の降雪を経験する地域における典型的な住宅街の場面を記録している。深い積雪によって、アクセスを維持するための手動による除雪が必要になり、北米の寒冷気候における家庭生活の一般的な側面であった。
家自体は、羽目板張りサイディング、シャッター、覆いのある出入口などの要素を備えた2階建て構造であり、その時代の一般的な住宅建築を代表しているが、その基礎的な構造は1970年代より前のものであるかもしれない。この画像は、冬季気象に関連した実用的な課題と日常ルーチンをとらえている。
