つるに覆われたパーゴラの下にある段状の木製ベンチは、1960年代に動物園と海洋公園が次々と建設した野外円形劇場の一つのものである。この種の施設は数百人が調教されたアザラシやイルカを20分間見るために設計されていた。子どもたちはいつものように上部のレールを占領し、誰もが問題だと思わないような崖の上に足をぶら下げて腰かけている。この時期、木製の狭い縁は十分な子ども用安全対策と考えられていたからだ。
その下で、大人たちは待つという営みに身を入れていた。1960年代のアメリカでこれは、Dr Pepperの缶、キャットアイ型のサングラス、そして長い距離を運転してここにたどり着いた人々の独特の忍耐力を意味した。白いドレスを着た彫刻的なヘアスタイルの女性は、筋肉一つ動かさずに状況を監視している人物の表情をしており、当時はそれで十分な監督と見なされていた。
フレーム内の誰もが、まさに始まろうとしているショーを見ていない。他人を見つめるか、何も見ていないか、以前からこれをしてきた群衆の無頓着な様子を見せている。その群衆は40分がどのくらいの長さであるかを正確に知っている。
