高い木が透き通った青い空へ葉を落とし、落ちるか枝に吊るされたそれぞれの葉が光を捉えている—編集も芸術的意図も必要としない光景で、ただ秋の明るい日に空に向かってカメラを向け暦に仕事をさせた写真家がいただけである。落ちる葉の背後には、ほぼ裸になった別の木が立ち、遠い背景には暗い構造が丘陵に対して立ち上がり、その輪郭は建物か土木工事のいずれかを示唆している。これは20世紀半ばには既に田舎の空間に侵入し始めていたタイプの開発である。構図は落ちる葉と遠い工事現場をフレーム内で等しく扱い、まるで秋と進歩が同じ瞬間に起こっているかのようであり、実際そうであった。誰かがこの光景を記録する価値があると考えた。
The historian's note
この光景は、既に開発された、または開発中の風景（おそらく北米）における季節の移り変わりの瞬間を捉えており、色彩の彩度とフィルムストックに基づいて20世紀半ばと推定される。遠い丘陵に見える機械または建設の存在は、1950年代以降のアメリカの風景を特徴付けた加速する郊外化と土地の改変の時期を示す。落ちる葉を工事現場に対してフレーミングするという写真家の選択—意図的であれ偶発的であれ—その時代を定義した緊張を記録している。すなわち、自然のサイクルの同時の喪失と土地そのものの変容である。
