The historian's note

この画像は、米国南東部の淡水沼地または池にほぼ確実に部分的に沈んでいるアメリカワニ(Alligator mississippiensis)を描いている。これらの頂点捕食者はこの地域の湿地帯——North Carolinaからテキサスまで——に生息し、1973年に絶滅危惧種に指定され、保全活動の強化と保護生息地の確立につながった。

国立公園、州立公園、専用野生動物保護区における野生動物観察の機会は1970年代に大幅に拡大した。これらの保護区はしばしば木道や観察デッキなどのインフラストラクチャを組み込んでおり、前景に見える木製の手すりによって例示されており、訪問者が自然生息地で在来種を安全に観察することができた。
