Somebody has just launched himself off the rock with both arms up, the universal signal of a boy who has decided gravity is basically a formality. Below him the water holds a dozen heads bobbing at various distances from shore, and above him three more boys sit on the ledge working up the nerve, each one pretending the wait is strategic rather than terrified.
Nobody here has a lifejacket, a rope, or a supervising adult with a whistle, which was simply how swimming holes operated before liability became a national pastime. The limestone walls rising white and sheer around the pool made a natural diving platform that no committee had approved and no sign had measured, and that omission was considered a feature.
The boy in the white t-shirt at the front, still dry, has the look of someone doing the math on the rocks below and the height above, the same math every kid at every swimming hole in that decade did instead of listening to the one adult who wasn't there to say no.
The historian's note
Informal swimming holes in limestone or karst gorges were common summer gathering points across rural Europe and North America through the mid-twentieth century, particularly in regions where natural pools formed below cliff faces and offered a free alternative to municipal pools. Cliff-jumping into such pools was an unregulated but widespread youth activity, generally passed down informally rather than taught.
The scene reflects recreational customs typical of the 1960s, when organized safety oversight of swimming areas was minimal outside formal lifeguard-staffed facilities, and children and teenagers commonly supervised themselves at natural water sites.
The specific location cannot be determined from the available evidence, though the pale, weathered limestone cliffs and dense surrounding woodland are consistent with karst river gorges found in Mediterranean Europe and similar limestone regions elsewhere.
