On the image

A landscape of high desert terrain in the American West, dominated by pale gray-green sagebrush and scattered granite boulders that have weathered into rounded shapes by millennia of temperature swings and snow melt. The vegetation is so sparse and uniform that it reads less as a thriving ecosystem and more as the residue of one, the kind of country where water is such a precious afterthought that nothing grows unless it can survive on what falls in a handful of storms per year. Conifer forest shows at the top edge, suggesting this is the transition zone where the Great Basin or Sierra Nevada foothills meet higher elevation timberland—the boundary where a few thousand feet of elevation shift means the difference between scrub and forest. The boulders scattered throughout the composition suggest glacial activity in the distant past, the ground still in conversation with ice ages long ended.

The historian's note

High desert sagebrush steppe occurs throughout the intermountain West at elevations between 4,000 and 8,000 feet, covering much of Nevada, Utah, Idaho, eastern Oregon and Washington, and the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade ranges. This landscape type emerged after the Pleistocene glaciation retreated, and has been shaped by centuries of native grazing and, from the mid-1800s onward, by livestock ranching and fire suppression. The granite boulders and sparse vegetation visible here are characteristic of the rain shadow country east of major mountain ranges, where annual precipitation rarely exceeds twelve inches. By the 1950s, scientific interest in the Great Basin's ecology and geology was growing, driven partly by postwar expansion of geological survey work and partly by increasing pressure from ranching and mining interests seeking to understand and exploit the region's resources.
