Door County in early summer runs on two industries: cherries and the idea that nature there is doing something special just for you. Someone knelt in the grass with a camera to prove the point, and to their credit, the flower cooperated.
The bud is a wild iris — almost certainly a blue flag, Iris versicolor, the species that colonizes the wet meadow edges and boggy shoreline margins that Door County's peninsula geography produces in reliable abundance. It has not opened yet, which is either a limitation or the whole point, depending on whether you came to see the thing or to catch it becoming itself. The shooter chose the second reading.
Close-up nature photography in 2002 occupied a particular cultural moment: digital was arriving but hadn't yet made everyone a macro photographer, so the person who went to the trouble with a dedicated lens still believed they were doing something most people couldn't. The bud holds its purple veining against the backlit white of a petal just beginning to separate from the sepal, indifferent to the theory.
