He has his hand flat against a block of stone that has outlasted every government that ever claimed to run Peru, and he is explaining something to someone out of frame, the way tourists in the 1960s liked to narrate ancient engineering they had just read about on the bus. The wall behind him is the real subject and does not care. Inca masons fitted these polygonal stones without mortar sometime before the Spanish arrived, and the joints are still so tight you cannot slide a coin between them, a fact every guide of the era repeated as though daring visitors to try.
The man's tweed jacket and knit tie suggest he dressed for the trip the way people once dressed for air travel generally, as an event requiring seriousness rather than comfort. Two shadows crowd into the frame at his feet, evidence that a small crowd stood exactly where he stood, waiting their turn at the same stone, forming an orderly little line to be photographed touching something they could not begin to explain.
Sacsayhuamán draws that reaction from almost everyone who visits: an instinct to put a hand on the rock, as if surface contact might transmit understanding. It never does. The stones were finished centuries before he arrived and will be finished centuries after the tape in his camera has faded past recognition.
