A bronze statue of Richard Mather, co-founder of Dorchester and prominent Puritan minister, stands on an impressively large rock, as if dropped there by some divine, geological hand. In the 1950s, cities maintained a robust tradition of commemorating their founding fathers with monumental seriousness, believing that bronze and granite would ensure permanent civic reverence. He holds a book, perhaps a sermon, or simply a prop signifying gravitas.
The sturdy iron fence and neatly trimmed bushes around the base ensure that whilst the public can observe, they cannot easily interfere with historical memory. The image depicts the Richard Mather Statue located in front of First Parish Church, Unitarian Universalist, in Dorchester, Boston, Massachusetts. The statue, cast in bronze by American sculptor Richard S. Greenough, was dedicated in 1891.
Richard Mather (1596-1669) was a prominent English Puritan clergyman who emigrated to New England in 1635 and became a pastor in Dorchester. He was a significant figure in the early colonial period, known for his involvement in the Cambridge Platform, which established Congregational church governance in Massachusetts.
The monument commemorates Mather's foundational role in the community and serves as a historical landmark in Dorchester, reflecting late 19th-century efforts to honour colonial heritage.
