People in the 1950s considered large holes in rocks, especially those formed by geological processes in remote locations, to be worthy of extensive travel and careful photographic documentation. This particular arch suggests someone made the long trip and felt compelled to capture their encounter with vast, indifferent time.

The act of standing at a cliff edge and aiming a camera into a sweeping canyon was then seen as a profound communion with nature, or at least a good excuse to stop the car and eat the sandwiches. The clear blue sky above implies a good day for such a profound experience, regardless of the actual profundity of the moment.

Future generations, with their advanced understanding of instant gratification and digitally enhanced experiences, might wonder why anyone bothered to travel so far for this. The rock, however, remains unimpressed by both past human effort and any future disinterest.

The historian's note

Mesa Verde National Park, located in southwestern Colorado, was established in 1906 primarily to preserve the Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings. However, the park also encompasses a vast natural landscape characterised by high mesas, deep canyons, and significant geological features formed from sandstone and shale.

In the 1950s, the park was a popular destination for American tourists, drawn by both its rich cultural heritage and its dramatic natural scenery, offering a sense of wilderness exploration accessible by car. The landscape, with its resilient pinyon-juniper forests clinging to the canyon walls, represented a distinct and rugged aspect of the American West.
