He has arranged his face into the specific squint of a man who has decided, mid-vacation, that he is enjoying himself. The bucket hat is doing serious work here, the kind of sensible headgear that 1960s tourism guides insisted upon and that nobody wore again once they saw the photographs. Behind him the water throws back the sun in a thousand small congratulations, as if the sea itself approved of the trip.
The open collar and the loosened, half-shed jacket suggest a boat that has been out long enough for formality to lose its grip. Somewhere behind that contented squint is the confidence of a man who packed for this trip believing he had anticipated everything, weather included. The hills across the water keep their names to themselves, which was fine with him; he came to look at them, not to identify them.
This is the pose of a person who has stopped performing for the camera and started performing for himself, which is the closest most people in snapshots ever get to being caught off guard.
The historian's note
Recreational boat travel expanded significantly during the 1960s as postwar affluence and increased leisure time made private and chartered boating accessible to a wider middle class in North America, Europe, and coastal tourist regions worldwide. Sun hats of the wide-brimmed cotton or canvas type shown here were standard tourist equipment of the period, sold in seaside shops and travel outfitters as protection against sunburn before sunscreen use became widespread.
The backlit coastal hills and open water suggest a pleasure cruise or ferry crossing rather than a working vessel, consistent with amateur travel photography of the era, when colour slide film was commonly used to document overseas or coastal vacations. No specific location, vessel, or individual can be confirmed from the available visual evidence.
