Someone stood at a guardrail in Yellowstone National Park and pointed a camera straight down into geology that had been eroding quietly for thousands of years before anyone thought to put a car park nearby. The canyon's famous yellow walls, the ones that gave the park its name according to a story every ranger tells and no geologist fully endorses, drop away in bands of oxidised rhyolite toward a river that looks decorative from this height and is not.
By the 1950s a stop at this viewpoint was a fixture of the American family road trip, the postwar estate car having replaced the stagecoach as the preferred way to arrive somewhere spectacular and stay only long enough for one exposure. The canyon obliged by holding still. It has never needed anyone's itinerary.
What the camera caught, without particularly trying, was the scale mismatch that always undoes tourist photography of the place: a river capable of carving a gorge over geologic time, reduced in the frame to a white ribbon a person could almost believe they understood.
