On the image
Tourists in the 1970s often approached a famous landmark with a certain determined optimism, believing that whatever view they managed to get, through whatever gap or window, would be the definitive record of their visit. Here, the impressive Giralda tower of Seville Cathedral rises majestically, its elaborate Renaissance belfry reaching for a perpetually clear blue sky.
The photographer has captured the scene through a narrow opening, probably a window or archway, ensuring that no actual composition would be possible. This was less about framing the perfect shot and more about documenting the fact that one was, indeed, looking at the Giralda.
Behind a sturdy stone wall and a palm tree, the ancient structure patiently waits, as it has for centuries, to be admired, or at least briefly glimpsed between two dark, unmoving obstacles, proving that travel was once an act of faith rather than artistic endeavour.
The historian's note
This image captures the Giralda, the iconic bell tower of Seville Cathedral, in Seville, Spain, during the 1970s. Originally the minaret of the Almohad mosque built in the 12th century, it was converted into a bell tower for the Christian cathedral after the Reconquista in the 13th century. The upper, Renaissance-style belfry and the statue of El Giraldillo were added in the 16th century.
Seville Cathedral, or the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See, is the largest Gothic cathedral and the third-largest church in the world by area. It was constructed from 1401 to 1528 on the site of the former mosque and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
During the 1970s, Spain was experiencing a significant boom in international tourism, with its historical cities and coastal regions attracting a growing number of visitors. Seville remained a major cultural destination, and its cathedral and Giralda were key attractions.
