This image depicts visitors exploring the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument in New Mexico during the 1970s. The monument preserves a series of caves and structures built by the Mogollon culture, ancestors of contemporary Pueblo peoples, primarily between 1275 and 1300 CE.
These multi-storey dwellings, constructed from natural stone and mud mortar within large cliff alcoves, provided shelter and defence. They represent a significant example of prehistoric architecture and adaptation to the challenging desert environment of the American Southwest.
By the 1970s, national parks and monuments were popular tourist destinations, with access to such sites often involving direct interaction with the structures via ladders and trails, reflecting a common approach to historical preservation and public access of the period.
