On the image

A patch of bare earth and leaf litter hosts the earliest colonists of regrowth: thin green seedlings with their cotyledons still visible, pushing through the tan and grey debris of last year's fall. This image records the pioneer stage of plant colonisation on bare or disturbed soil, a phase foresters tracked to monitor recovery rates and predict reforestation timelines. Colour documentation of such ecological detail was rare and expensive in that decade, indicating the subject was part of a larger research project or agency protocol rather than amateur naturalism. The sparse, measurable quality of the seedling emergence suggests this was part of a comparative or longitudinal study, the kind of incremental baseline photography that environmental science relied upon before digital monitoring existed.
