By the late 1960s, Disneyland had perfected the trick of building a more convincing New Orleans than the one four hundred miles away, complete with wrought-iron balconies and shutters that never needed to keep out an actual hurricane. Guests gathered here in the evening light under a striped canvas awning, queuing for whatever attraction or eatery lay behind it, dressed in the era's uniform of striped shirts, capri trousers, and the unshakable belief that a theme park could be visited in regular clothes and still look effortless in photographs.
Nobody in the crowd seems aware they are standing inside a facade; that was rather the point of the design, and the point of the holiday. The balconies above them are real construction and fake history simultaneously, a distinction that mattered to nobody holding a churro. A streetlamp glows on cue at the edge of the frame, doing the job real gaslight used to do in a city this place was never quite pretending hard enough to be.
Somewhere under that awning is a family who planned this trip for a year, and who will remember it as New Orleans long after they forget it was Anaheim.
The historian's note
New Orleans Square opened at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, in 1966, the park's first major land expansion since its 1955 debut. It was designed to evoke the French Quarter of the mid-nineteenth century, using wrought-iron balconies, gas-lamp-style lighting, and narrow shopfronts to create an immersive commercial district rather than a single ride or attraction.
The area anchored major additions including the Pirates of the Caribbean and later the Haunted Mansion, and its architecture set a template for themed retail and dining environments that influenced shopping-centre and resort design well beyond the park itself. Evening crowds such as this one were typical of peak attendance in the land's first years of operation, when the novelty of the fully built environment drew significant press attention.
The scene documents an ordinary evening of park attendance rather than a special event, reflecting the everyday use for which New Orleans Square was built.
