On the image

Somewhere a marching band is coming, and until it arrives the wooden shoes have to do the entertaining. Adults in aproned Dutch costume stand clattering along the curb in klompen carved for exactly one purpose a year, the rest of their calendar spent in normal shoes like everyone else in Michigan.

The historian's note

This scene documents an American Dutch-heritage festival of the kind established in western Michigan communities in the early twentieth century, most famously Holland, Michigan's Tulip Time Festival, founded in 1929 to commemorate the area's Dutch settlement. By the 1960s such festivals had become fixed civic traditions, drawing thousands of spectators for parades featuring residents in traditional Dutch dress, including wooden shoes (klompen), aprons, and lace caps modelled on historic Netherlands regional costume.

These events combined genuine ethnic heritage observance with mid-century American civic boosterism, serving to promote tourism and local identity in small manufacturing and agricultural towns. Street-side seating on curbs, rather than constructed grandstands, was typical of small-town parade viewing in this period, when municipal parade routes ran directly through residential main streets.
