Someone stood at the edge of a hayfield with a loaded camera and decided that the blue hour was the moment to capture the whole valley in one frame. The light was already failing, the ridgelines gone flat and graphite-dark, but amateur photographers of the era trusted their Kodachrome the way other people trusted their insurance agent, and pointed the lens at distance anyway.
What the camera actually caught was two small farm buildings sitting alone in the middle ground, gable ends white against the tree line, doing the unglamorous work of sheltering hay and stock while nobody photographed them up close. The parallel ridges behind them are the folded backbone of the Appalachians, the kind of terrain that decided, a hundred years earlier, exactly where a farm could go and exactly how big it could get.
Nobody in this picture is visible, which was rather the point. This was a landscape kept for the album, not the mantel, evidence brought home from a summer trip that a certain valley existed and that the sky over it, for about four minutes at dusk, had looked like something worth using a whole frame of film on.
