On the image

Here lies what appears to be a dry creek bed, a common feature in places where water is a temporary visitor but erosion is a constant companion. Someone, at some point, decided that strategically placed rocks could convince the water to behave itself. This was likely before the era of multi-million pound government-funded hydrological surveys, relying instead on the simpler 'stack rocks here' method.

The result is this rather earnest-looking stone construction, a series of low walls built across the channel. It speaks to a certain pioneer optimism, a belief that a few days of labour could impose order on a landscape shaped by millennia of geology. One assumes they meant well.

Today, it mostly serves as an interesting arrangement of rocks, suggesting that either the water stopped flowing, or it found a more efficient way to ignore human instructions. Nature rarely fills out the proper permits.
