The uniform is new enough that the creases from the store package are still visible in the shirt, and the boy has clearly practised the salute in a mirror more than once before someone fetched the camera. Cub Scouting in the 1960s ran on exactly this kind of moment: a mother's sewing machine attaching a den number to a sleeve, a father posing his son against the nearest blank wall because the den meeting itself was two hours off and the light was better at home.
The yellow neckerchief and the cap badge are correct to the letter, which was the entire point of the organisation at that age. Nobody in this hallway is pretending the salute means anything operational; it means the boy has been paying attention, and paying attention was treated as a virtue worth photographing.
Behind him the panelled door and the ordinary house wall place the scene squarely in someone's home rather than a scout hall, proof that the ritual of documentation didn't wait for the official setting. The salute holds, the eyes are dead level at the lens, and the boy has the look of someone who has been told this will only take a second.
