Someone bought a truck, and in the 1960s that fact demanded a photograph. The man stands with his arm draped over the woman's shoulder in the proprietary way people once posed with major purchases, as though the Chevrolet behind them were a family member who had just been confirmed by a priest rather than a vehicle financed at the local dealership.
She wears the cat-eye glasses and set curls of a woman who dressed for the occasion of standing next to a truck, because in this era every photograph was implicitly a formal one. He wears the faint, satisfied smile of a man who has just explained horsepower to someone who did not ask.
The carport and the row of parked cars behind them suggest a workplace lot rather than a driveway, the kind of place where a man's truck was also, quietly, his résumé. Nobody photographs a truck like this anymore, mostly because nobody has to prove anything to it.
