From a comfortable height, one can observe humanity's primary directive: organise the dirt. Here, in the 1970s, an entire valley has been meticulously divided into neat squares and rows, each dedicated to the relentless production of something edible or otherwise useful. Small villages dot the landscape, existing mostly to house the people who perform this important dirt-rearrangement.
One such village prominently features a minaret, a tall, slender structure indicating a belief system that requires regular, audible reminders of one's obligations, even if those obligations mostly involve more dirt. Nearby, a slightly more industrial cluster suggests a factory has found a way to process the local dirt-products, or perhaps the dirt itself, into something with greater perceived value.
The entire scene, viewed from above, perfectly illustrates humanity's ongoing, earnest effort to assert control over the natural world, piece by piece. It's a grand project that, from this distance, looks remarkably like a child's meticulously organised garden plot, only on a much larger scale and with more paperwork.
The historian's note
This wide-angle view captures an agricultural valley, likely in the Anatolian region of Turkey, during the 1970s. The landscape is characterised by extensive cultivation, featuring a mix of terraced hillsides and flatter plains.
Visible settlements include a village with a prominent minaret, indicating a Muslim-majority population and cultural context. Nearby, an industrial complex, possibly a quarry or processing plant, highlights the blend of traditional agriculture with emerging industrial development characteristic of the period in many rural areas.
The scene provides insight into land use patterns and rural infrastructure development in the mid-20th century. The photograph documents a landscape shaped by centuries of human activity, transitioning with modern economic pressures.
