Observing wildlife in the 1970s often involved waiting patiently for an animal to perform some natural behaviour. Here, an alligator demonstrates its advanced technique for remaining mostly invisible whilst still technically being present in the water. This was considered a successful sighting.

The creature's survival strategy relies heavily on appearing to be a floating log, a trick that works with varying success depending on the local ecosystem and the average intelligence of passing mammals. It is a testament to natural selection that this particular adaptation continues to thrive.

The historian's note
