Two researchers are hand-sorting blueberries onto enamel trays whilst a graduated cylinder holds a tinted solution beside an assortment of beakers and measuring tools — the full apparatus of mid-century agricultural science applied to the problem of whether a berry is regulation size. The 1960s were a golden era for this kind of painstaking manual protocol, when the answer to any quality-control question was to count the things by hand and write down the number, ideally in triplicate.

The setup reads as a university extension-station or USDA-affiliated lab: the combination of food samples and volumetric glassware points to a grading or density study, the sort of work that produced the federal standards still printed on blueberry cartons today. Someone upstairs had decided that American consumers deserved a uniform berry, and someone in this room was going to sort every last one of them to prove it.

The researcher in front keeps her eyes on the tray with the focused patience of a person who understands that science, at the bench level, is mostly counting small round objects until a pattern emerges — and that the pattern, when it finally does, will become a government bulletin that nobody reads.
