On the image

Someone decided a better view of this remote lake and its surrounding wilderness required a vantage point only achievable from a small aircraft. This was often how nature was 'experienced' in the 1970s, from a safe, slightly removed distance that allowed for both admiration and preliminary land-use planning.

Down below, a dirt track snakes through the dense forest, leading to a cleared area where human ambition has left its mark on the landscape. One assumes this was for a very important reason, perhaps involving timber or mineral extraction, or possibly just the site of a particularly large, impromptu community picnic.

The lake, largely undisturbed by these ground-level activities, reflects the general indifference of nature to such grand human plans. It will probably still be there, looking much the same, long after the dirt track has been reclaimed by a fresh generation of pine trees and the specific 'important reason' has been forgotten.
