People navigate a wide avenue in Leningrad, under the watchful, if unseeing, golden spire of the Admiralty. This kind of grandeur was common in cities designed by emperors, later adapted to serve the workers, who mostly just needed to get across the street.
On the curb, a few citizens engage in the vital transaction of purchasing goods from a street vendor, a necessary detour in the planned economy. Pedestrians move with the determined pace of those who know where they are going, or at least where they are supposed to be going, which was often the same thing.
The wide boulevards and imposing façades hint at a city designed for parades and official pronouncements, but daily life, it turns out, mostly consists of walking and waiting. The 1970s offered plentiful opportunities for both.

The image depicts a street scene in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Soviet Union, during the 1970s.
Prominently featured in the background is the golden spire of the Admiralty Building, a major landmark originally constructed as the headquarters of the Imperial Russian Navy. Its distinctive spire, topped with a ship, is a well-known symbol of the city.
The wide avenue and classical architecture are characteristic of central Leningrad, reflecting its imperial past whilst functioning as a bustling urban centre in the Soviet era.
